The Tamil Language

Tamil is a Dravidian language predominantly spoken by the Tamil people of India and Sri Lanka, and by the Tamil diaspora worldwide. It is an official language in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the union territory of Puducherry, and in Sri Lanka and Singapore. Tamil is one of the longest-surviving classical languages in the world, with a rich history and a literary tradition that spans over 2,000 years.

Tamil is unique among Dravidian languages for its use of agglutinative grammar, where affixes are used extensively to form words and express grammatical relationships. The language is characterized by its complex verb conjugations and noun declensions. Tamil script, derived from the Brahmi script, consists of 12 vowels, 18 consonants, and one special character, the āytam.

The language is divided into three distinct forms: Classical Tamil, which is used in literary and scholarly contexts; Modern Standard Tamil, which is used in formal and educational settings; and the colloquial form used in everyday communication. Tamil literature is vast and varied, encompassing everything from ancient epics to contemporary works, and it plays a crucial role in the cultural and religious life of Tamil-speaking communities.
