The Sinhalese Language
Sinhalese, also known as Sinhala, is an Indo-Aryan language primarily spoken by the Sinhalese people in Sri Lanka, where it serves as one of the official languages alongside Tamil. It is the native language of about 16 million people. Sinhalese has its own script, derived from the ancient Brahmi script, and features a rich literary history dating back over two thousand years.
The language has two main forms: the spoken or colloquial form and the written or literary form, which differs significantly in vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. Sinhalese phonology is noted for its strict adherence to the mora (a unit of syllable length), and it features several unique phonetic sounds that distinguish it from other Indo-Aryan languages. The language’s syntax is subject-object-verb (SOV) and it exhibits a complex system of noun declensions and verb conjugations. Sinhalese also has a significant amount of loanwords from Pali, Sanskrit, Portuguese, Dutch, and English, reflecting its historical and colonial influences.
